Charlie has been teaching our son for six years and not only is he a talented teacher, but also an inspiring role model! Charlie has taught our son the fundamental percussion rudiments, sight reading, and has also introduced him to a myriad of percussion instruments such as the snare, drum kit, congas, wood blocks, glockenspiel, and the djembe. One thing I can say as an adult student about Charlie is that he is a master at breaking information down into smaller/more manageable pieces for his students to grasp. I came to his studio having never even held the sticks and within three short months I was playing along to AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, and many more of my favorite songs. Not only have I been studying with Charlie for two years now, but I’m also playing gigs with a friend’s band. Charlie was my personal percussion instructor at the Lawrence Eisman Center for Preparatory Studies in Music from the time I was 8 up until I turned 17. As someone who spent my youth taking part in countless sports teams, after-school and music programs, and had his fair share of instructors, Charlie holds a special place for me. As my teacher for over half my life at the time, Charlie always knew how to find the perfect balance between a stern, fair teacher and mentor, a tough older brother, and a great friend. He always taught with my best interest at heart, pointing me towards the Juilliard Summer Percussion Seminar, which he helped me audition for and enroll into in 2013. As my instructor, Charlie was the perfect embodiment of what a teacher should be. He helped build me up as a very young student and person, maximized my talents and opportunities, and pushed me to continue well beyond my time with him.- Nick
